Ahead of professional footballer, Kylian Mbappe’s, rumoured move to professional football club Real Madrid de Futbol (“Real Madrid”), the 25-year old is taking steps to protect his name and signature celebratory pose.

Mbappe has made a number of trade mark applications before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (“EUIPO”), which include trade mark applications for his surname ‘Mbappe’ and for his famous crossed-arm goal celebration pose. The latter figurative mark depicts a footballer with crossed arms and raised thumbs. Mbappe has filed applications for two of his most well-known quotes ‘Moi tu m’parles pas d’age” [don’t talk to me about age] and “Le football il a change” [football has changed].

The trade marks have been applied for across a wide range of goods including cosmetics, jewellery, home textiles, clothing and video games. It is to be seen if the EUIPO will grant the protection.
