A New York federal court has dismissed a copyright infringement claim filed against American Rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, over her hit song, ‘Savage’.

The infringement claim, which was brought by producer James Green, argued that the rapper’s Grammy winning hit copied elements of his 1999 song, ‘It’s About to Be On’.

Green alleged that he sent recordings of his song to figures within the music industry in the early 2000s, one of whom was a mentor of J. White Did It, the producer of Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Savage’.

However, a US District Judge found that Green had failed to sufficiently prove that Megan’s producer had access to ‘It’s About to Be On’. Additionally, the judge ruled that there was an insufficient level of similarity between the two tracks and that, whilst they did share similar time signature and rhythmic sequence, these elements were not protected by copyright. Therefore, the claim was dismissed.
