Paramount Pictures is once again facing allegations of copyright infringement in relation to their 2022 film, Top Gun: Maverick.
Barry Tubb, the actor behind Wolfman in the original Top Gun film has issued proceedings against the production company on grounds that Paramount Pictures unlawfully used his image in the sequel. The image in question is said to have been used in a scene which shows the Top Gun class of 1986, and that use is ‘essential in a way that is not incidental’.
Tubb claims that whilst he gave Paramount Pictures permission to use his image for various purposes, this permission was limited to materials relating to the 1986 film only and did not include any sequels. Tubb is seeking an unspecified sum in damages as a result of this alleged infringement.
This is not the first time that Paramount Pictures has been the subject of copyright infringement allegations over the Top Gun: Maverick film. Paramount Pictures have previously faced infringement proceedings from the family of the late Ehud Yonay over its failure to acquire a new licence.
It is to be seen in whose favour the court will decide.
