A Manhattan jury have returned a verdict in favour of British singer Ed Sheeran in a federal court in New York finding him not guilty of copyright infringement. Back in April we reported on the dispute between Ed Sheeran and the heirs of Marvin Gaye over Sheeran’s hit single “Thinking Out Loud”. Gaye’s heirs claimed Sheeran had copied key components of Gaye’s song “Lets Get It On” when creating his own hit single. Sheeran claimed the trial was a threat to all musicians who create their own music. Representatives for Gaye’s heirs argued Sheeran has been known to perform the two songs on stage together and this itself was “smoking gun” proof Sheeran copied Gaye’s song. In his own testimony, Sheeran claimed he often sang song mash-ups on stage to “spice it up a bit”. This isn’t the first copyright litigation Sheeran has been subject to over his music. In April 2022, Sheeran was accused of copying Sami Chokri & Ross O’Donoghue’s song “Oh Why” when creating “Shape Of You”. Sheeran also prevailed at that trial.
