Secretaries of State for Science and Culture Collaborate to Resolve AI Copyright Issues

The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Liz Kendall, successor to the role following Peter Kyle’s departure as part of the Labour government’s cabinet shuffle, has stated that the government will work to aid musicians and artists in their battle for their rights against AI companies.

Following several protests from prominent UK-based artists, such as Elton John, Paul McCartney and Sam Fender, both Kendall and the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy are working to produce an amicable resolution between the AI sector and the creative sector.

While some artists have expressed their optimism in Kendall’s words of support in favour of the creative industry, there is a belief amongst the industry that the government must act faster in order to secure a stronger protection for artists, with the focuses being on the prevention of copyright infringement and the renumeration of artists for their work being used without the appropriate consent.

Kendall herself has stated that while she appreciates the urgency of the matter, resolving the core issues at hand will take a longer time than many would like in order to reach a fair compromise between the sectors.
