Mungo Jerry front man, Ray Dorset, has spoken out about a new technology which could help to cut down the amount of piracy online. He has been working with the anti-piracy firm, TCAT, who use unique fingerprinting software to track the origin of an infringing song, leading the firm to the person who has infringed it.
The band Mungo Jerry are most well known for their hit single ‘In the Summertime’, which was released in 1970. Based on this song alone, it is estimated that members of the band have lost £23 million in royalties to piracy. It is because of this that Ray sought to take substantive action, stating that “if it’s money that you are entitled to, then you should be getting it”.
The injustice felt by Ray about the loss of royalties led him to TCAT. TCAT Protect is a cloud based solution which uses audio-fingerprinting and matching technology to match the client’s song with songs across their database of over 450 million tracks to establish any similarities. Ray highlights that this type of service will allow rightsholders to find the root of where pirated music is being distributed from and allow more meaningful legal action to be taken.
Implementing this sort of service on a wider scale has the potential to drastically reduce the amount of infringing works online and allow rightsholders to recuperate a greater amount of their lost royalties.
