Last week Birmingham Crown Court sentenced four offenders to a combined seven-and-a-half-year imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to charges for possessing, supplying and selling counterfeit goods. The prosecution was secured as a result of long investigations carried out by the National Trading Standards Regional Investigations Team with assistance from the Birmingham team, after multiple seizures between April 2018 and August 2020.
The offenders were named as Mahroof Hussain, Basharat Hussain, Mohammed Saleh, and Nadeem Mohammed. The first three were sentenced to conspiracy to possess counterfeits for supply and are facing imprisonment, and the last individual who was sentenced for being in possession of counterfeit goods with the intention of those goods being supplied, was handed a community order and unpaid work. The individuals sold counterfeit footwear, clothing and accessories, imitating brands such as Adidas, Nike and Chanel.
The chair of the National Trading Standard Board, Lord Bichard, stressed the importance of targeting counterfeits and that harsh punishments, such as those handed out in this case, act as a deterrent. Further, he urged consumers to be on the lookout for any fake products.
