Rapper Drake, who is known for various hit songs including “One Dance” and “Gods Plan” has been involved in his fair share of legal battles over the years, including the recent alleged unauthorised use of the Vogue brand name and trade marks. He is also the subject of another infringement of intellectual property rights, this time over his hit single “Way 2 Sexy”. Rapper Angelou Skywalker sued Drake in 2021 over alleged copyright infringement of his song “Reach For Skies”. Skywalker argued Drake had access to the song via the UMG-owned website “Spinnup”. In a legal win for Drake, his motion to dismiss the claim was granted in its entirety. Whilst the judge ruled the songs did not share enough elements to rise to the level of copyright infringement, court documents also give rise to the claimants repeated misconduct throughout the proceedings. Whilst waiting for a decision, Skywalker allegedly sent various inappropriate emails to the prosecutors and the U.S. district judge. Drake will no doubt be hoping for a similar victory in his dispute with Vogue, If you have any questions on the above, please do not hesitate to contact the team at McDaniels Law on 0191 281 4000 or legal@mcdanielslaw.com. in: Case Law, Copyright, EU/International, Legal News, News
