Adventurer and television presenter Bear Grylls has been summoned by the High Court of Delhi over alleged copyright infringement. Bear Grylls has been named, amongst others for the alleged infringement over his hit reality show “Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls”. Scriptwriter Arrman Shankar Sharma issued the proceedings claiming that the script infringed his original copyrighted script “Aakhri Dum Takk-Till the Last Breath” which was allegedly scripted back in 2009. The show hosted by Bear Grylls began four years later in 2013. Bear Grylls’ show has been televised over the last 10 years, but has only recently appeared on screens in India. The parties are scheduled to attend mediation to resolve the dispute on 17 January 2023, and should that matter not settle, a hearing is scheduled for 22 February 2023. Documents filed with the court assert that Sharma pitched his idea to the Discovery Channel, but the Channel dismissed this as it did not meet its programming and inventory needs. Sharma claims Bear Grylls was working with the Discovery Channel at that time but later resigned and began his new show with channel NBC. Sharma claims the locations, entry, interval, climax and the concept of Bear Grylls show are the same as his and thus infringes his copyright. It is to be seen if the matter will settle at mediation or if the parties will proceed to the hearing scheduled in February.
