Anthropic PBC recently became embroiled in a class-action lawsuit filed by various book authors, who claim that the company pirated copies of their books to train its AI chatbot Claude. It has now been reported that the AI company has agreed to settle.
It is reported that the settlement figure sits at approximately $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion), with one of the solicitors for the authors stating, “as best as we can tell, it’s the largest copyright recovery ever”.
However eye-watering this figure may be, the minimum amount to be awarded to each claimant is stated to be just $750 (£551) at least and $3,000 (£2,204) at most. Legal analysts speculate that the figure could have increased significantly had this matter not settled. A hearing is scheduled for later this month to review and agree the settlement terms.
With this matter set to end in a victory for the authors of the copyright works, it is crucial to be aware of your rights, and to be mindful of the Terms of Use when using AI models and of the information that AI provides to you.
