Earlier this week, the first patent was filed in the UKIPO’s new online filing service. The service is currently in the private beta stage of the patents pilot programme, and it is hoped that the service will prove successful and be rolled out for wider use early next year.
The new service is part of the One IPO Transformation Programme which seeks to provide a service whereby rightsholders can manage all of their UK IP rights in one place. This is intended to make the UKIPO a more “innovative, dynamic and responsive organisation”.
Some of the new improvements offered by the new service include allowing customers to view and manage their UK patent portfolio for the first time; provide a more streamlined application process; save and share application drafts; provide instant feedback on formatting issues; and allowing customers to reuse saved information on their account.
Additionally, the AI allocation tool that has been integrated into the new service allows applications to be allocated to the correct team instantly, which previously took up to 14 days.
Although the service is still in the pilot phase, the UKIPO intend to roll it out more widely by early 2025. The progress of the new service will be closely watched by IP practitioners and rightsholders over the coming months.
