Mariah Carey has found herself on Santa’s naughty list this year after the US Trade Mark Trial and Appeal Board ruled against Carey’s attempt to trade mark the name “Queen of Christmas”. Mariah Carey’s company, Lotion LLC attempted to register the mark at the United States Patent and Trade Mark Office in March 2021 for use on a range of merchandise including albums, fragrances, sunglasses and more. The application enraged various festive singers including Elizabeth Chan and Darlene Love. Chan felt she was left with no alternative but to take the dispute to court, claiming no one person should be able to monopolize anything surrounding Christmas. The decision has come as a landmark victory for Chan, as had Carey succeeded in registering the mark, Chan would not have been able to use that slogan. Whilst Carey made steps to register the slogan, when speaking on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Carey insisted she did not choose the title herself and confirmed she does not consider herself to be the Queen of Christmas. It was only two weeks ago we reported on Andy Stone, who has pulled the plug on proceedings against Carey for £17 million worth of damages over use of the title “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Carey may have won that battle, but has lost any right to the title Queen of Christmas.
