Last week, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris released his new single ‘Blessings’, which some listeners have pointed out shares some similarities with the 1996 dance song ‘Offshore’ by Chicane. Chicane has called Harris out on the alleged similarities and commented “I would like to thank Calvin Harris for making me current again” under one of Harris’ Instagram posts advertising the song.
In a video posted by Nick Bracegirdle, known professionally as Chicane, on 17 May 2025, he demonstrated the similarities between ‘Offshore’ and ‘Blessings’ by lining up the two tracks and looping sections together. The caption for the video reads “Copyright Alert … feel free to share the truth & facts laid out here”. Within the video, he stated “I think you’ll probably agree, it’s really hard to decipher when one comes in and one goes. That is because they’re almost identical, which is a bit of a problem. I am defending my copyright and my intellectual property here, guys.”
Harris responded to Chicane’s video on his Instagram account on 18 May 2025. In Harris’ video, he also lined up the two tracks with the intention of highlighting the differences. He stated “OK, so far, I’m not hearing it… it’s not the same… it’s genuinely not the same… but ultimately, even if that did sound the same, I’ve shifted it on the grid and I’ve pitched it as well.” Harris also went on to allege that Offshore itself was copied from the 1984 song ‘Love on a Real Train’ by Tangerine Dream.
Time will tell whether Chicane ultimately decides to take his copyright infringement allegation past social media and into the court.
