It has recently emerged that Chelsea and England star, Cole Palmer, has applied for several trade marks with the UK Intellectual Property Office (“IPO”). The applications include word marks for his name and his “Cold Palmer” nickname, and, most interestingly, a motion mark for his signature “ice cold” celebration.
The motion mark entails a short clip of Palmer recreating his iconic celebration, which involves him rubbing his arms and puffing out his cheeks, clearly indicating his ‘coldness’. Motion marks were first introduced by the IPO in January 2019, with Toshiba becoming the first company to register a motion mark in August of the same year.
Palmer, via Palmer Management Limited, has applied for five marks in total covering various goods and services such as cosmetics, food and nutrition supplements, razor blades, figurines, clothing, and alcoholic beverages.
It remains to be seen if Palmer will be successful in each of his trade mark applications and in particular for the multitudinous goods and services against which they are applied. Palmer’s actions again highlight the importance of sportspeople and other celebrities taking steps to protect their IP and other commercial interests.
