Meta Platforms Inc. (owner of Facebook) is facing a trade mark and unfair competition claim in the USA, reportedly filed on 19 July at Manhattan Federal Court.
The claim has been filed by MetaX LLC whose website (meta.is) currently contains the hashtag “therealmeta” along with full details of its complaint against Facebook, which is says has escalated after 8 months of attempted negotiations. MetaX LLC is the owner of two US trade marks covering various goods and services under the META mark, including “social media strategy and marketing consultancy focusing on helping clients create and extend their product and brand strategies by building virally engaging marketing solutions”.
MetaX LLC states on its website that this dispute is “bigger than our company” and is “about Facebook taking accountability for its action and committing to move forward ethically and equitably”. It will be interesting to follow Facebook’s reaction to this case if and when the matter progresses.
