Belarus Legalises Digital Piracy

Belarus, a county landlocked in Eastern Europe and a close ally of Russia has recently passed a new law, permitting digital piracy until the end of 2024.

The new law, which was enacted on 03 January 2023 legalises digital piracy if the copyright holder of the pirated material is from a country which commits “unfriendly actions” against Belarus. The law will be particularly pertinent to the USA following the US’s sanction on Belarus amid Belarus close ties with Russia. The US produces a vast amount of media content including Hollywood films and pop music.

The law also states remuneration will be paid for use of the pirated material. That remuneration will be paid to the state of Belarus and held for three years. If, during that time, the fee is not claimed by the rights holder, then it will be assimilated into state budgets.
