As part of a ten-part BBC One documentary series ‘Northern Justice’, members of the McDaniels Law team were privileged to share some of the stories of clients we had supported when faced with intellectual property issues and challenges.
The series explores what happens when ordinary people facing all sorts of extraordinary times in their lives turn to local lawyers in their hour of need. In the episodes featuring McDaniels Law, we show the steps that we took to help protect our clients’ hard-earned intellectual property rights and stop others from infringing and benefitting from their ideas and financial investment.
Episode 7 of the series features our client Sarah Greenwell, founder of Big Little Toys. Sarah is shocked to discover that a retail giant is stocking a Christmas toy that looks remarkably similar to her own design that she had spent a considerable amount of time and financial investment in. Following the discovery, she enlists McDaniels Law director, Niall Head-Rapson and the team to help stop the retailer from selling the toys.
In the programme, Niall comments:
“There are plenty of people out there who are innovating on a day-to-day basis within their business, they’re trying to create something of beauty, they’re trying to make a difference and it’s just frustrating and soul-destroying to see people come along and just think yeah, I’ll copy that…ruining people’s business.”
Following the screening of the episode, Sarah from Big Little Toys added:
“McDaniels Law supported me through a challenging time - together we stood up for what is fair and hope that this encourages other small businesses who may be in a similar position to take action. Thank you to Niall Head-Rapson and the team at Northern Justice for making this happen.”
