Battle of the Queens

Mariah Carey has provoked a legal battle with prominent festive singers in her attempt to trade mark the title “Queen of Christmas”.

Mariah Carey filed an application at the United States Patent and Trade Mark Office (“USPTO”) back in March 2021. In addition to applying for exclusive usage of Queen of Christmas, Carey has applied for “QOC”, “Princess of Christmas” and “Christmas Princess”. The application has left Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan no choice but to head to court. Chan claimed no one person should be able to monopolize anything surrounding Christmas.

Darlene Love claims to have been officially declared the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago by an American television host, David Letterman. This was one year before Carey released the popular song “All I want for Christmas is You”. In 2018, the New Yorker described Elizabeth Chan as “The Queen of Christmas”.

In the application to the USPTO, Carey is alleged to have cited a 2021 Billboard article which claims Carey is the “undisputed Queen of Christmas”.

It is to be seen if the parties can come together in true Christmas spirit and come to some kind of agreement for the benefit of all parties.
