Asos’ acquisition

It was announced today that online fashion retailer Asos is the new owner of Miss Selfridge, Topshop and other brands. It comes as Arcadia, a multinational retail company, was put into administration last year.

Although 300 jobs have been saved as part of the deal, a further 2,500 jobs are at risk. It is believed that Asos seen off competition from the US owner of the Barneys department store and Chinese fashion retailer Shein.

As with most acquisitions, there are likely to be express provisions in the agreement with regards to intellectual property rights. This is an important aspect of any business acquisition given that for example a brand and/or logo is what the general public often associate with a business.
