McDaniels Law is a long-standing legal affiliate of Anti-Copying in Design (ACID). This World Intellectual Property Day we join with ACID to celebrate intellectual property with ACID's new True or False competition.

ACID's World IP Day release and details of its new competition are below:

2021 Theme: IP AND SMEs – Taking Ideas to Market

Every April 26, the World Intellectual Property Office celebrates World Intellectual Property Day to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. WIPO say, “Every business starts with an idea. Each of the millions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that operate across the globe every day started with an idea that took shape in someone’s mind and made its way to market. When nurtured and enriched with ingenuity, know-how and flair an idea becomes an IP asset that can drive business development, economic recovery and human progress.”

Throughout the day on 26 April, we will hear from parliamentarians and some of the best UK designers from different industry sectors about the importance of IP to stimulate innovation for growth. Why IP Matters? And also, what are the challenges of bringing new ideas to market?

The Shadow Minister for International Trade, Rt Hon Emily Thornberry MP in a message to designers said “We appreciate what you do, we know you are the best and we, as politicians, must support you to go from strength to strength as we emerge from this terrible pandemic and continue to protect and promote the best of you. That is what intellectual property is about”

Minnie Moll, CEO of the Design Council said, “With the 2021 World Intellectual Property Day focus on taking ideas to market, designers need an intellectual property system that is flexible, reliable and easy to use. This is challenging in the rapidly changing global context, but it is vital given the international nature of the UK design industry. When nurtured and supported, those with design skills can transform a design idea into an IP asset that fuels business development, growth and economic recovery.”

Dids Macdonald, OBE., CEO of Anti Copying in Design said, “Flag-flying for the UK’s incredibly talented designers on World IP Day emphasises the importance of design and design protection as we negotiate new trade deals. The UK’s designers need to be assured of a much stronger and more robust UK enforcement system now the UK designers have lost the all-important automatic EU Unregistered Community Design protection in EU27, post Brexit. We will also continue to press Government for criminal provisions for unregistered design infringement as a real deterrent against IP theft.”

Anti Copying in Design (ACID) is also launching a True or False competition #IPTrueorFalse and the winner will be announced on British Intellectual Property Day on June 29th. The winner will be invited to a reception at the Palace of Westminster and receive a £250.00 voucher with two runners up each receiving £50 vouchers.
